Objective

Temple University values diversity and strives to offer all students the opportunity to learn in their native language for optimal educational experiences. ICS aimed to provide clear, distraction-free ASL video translations, ensuring the webinar content was inclusive for the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (HOH) community.

Services Provided

  • Accessible Media Services (AMS): Services from our AMS department were requested with the focus to make digital content accessible in post-production by adding assets such as video translations, multilingual captions, and more.
  • Sign Language Video Translation: For Temple University's monthly webinar series with the Institute on Disabilities PA Tech Accelerator, ICS ensures educational materials are accessible to the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Webinars are conducted in English, and ICS translates the content into American Sign Language (ASL). The ASL video translations are integrated as Picture-in-Picture (PIP) into the webinar recordings.
  • Permanently Accessible Video Deliverables: The final accessible webinar files are hosted on Temple University's website for public viewing, ensuring all future viewers can access the content in their native or preferred language.

Challenges

  • Placement of ASL Picture-in-Picture (PIP) could not obstruct webinar content. The fluctuating slide sizes and the need to display additional information required adjustments to the PIP's size. Care was taken to reposition ASL PIP to ensure all information remained visible on every slide. Additionally, special attention was given so that the ASL PIP displayed complete sentences and thoughts with natural transitions and timing.

  • The project ran smoothly with a quick turnaround time, reducing labor and costs for Temple University. For viewers who do not require ASL, the layout ensured a seamless, unobstructed viewing experience. The inclusion of ASL video translation enhanced accessibility, ensuring Deaf and HOH viewers had equal access to the webinar content.
